Pitching My Tent

I’ve spent the better half of today after lunch with the Uni-Visitors from Jaffray working on some CS questions with Taylor.

We have found a place to stay at, not far from here actually, which is looking pretty decent. It’s not particularly expensive for the area we’re in (which is just beside/between both UW campus and WLU campus), and it’s a townhouse, which ends up being definitely much more spacious than our place right now. I’ve never had the chance to pick out places to live for myself before, and I think of this as similar to picking out good patches of grass to set up tents at camps.

First you scan around for a flat, solid piece of ground. Check for concavity to make sure it won’t flood in the rain. You’re going to want high ground. Then you need to think about whether there’s going to be enough space to set down your tent. Are there stumps? Rocks? Perhaps stubborn tree-roots sticking out of the dirt? Is there anything at all that would be a nuisance to sleep on. You’re going to look for proximity to the nearest cluster of trees, for those midnight bathroom runs. Are we close or far from the dining area? Raccoons? Perhaps mosquito density!

There are lots of things to look for, and I’m not exactly sure I know how to do it properly yet, but it was an exciting event, going to do a viewing of the house and then laying down a deposit after a day of deliberation. I like this kind of grown up stuff. Also, I wish the landlord lady didn’t smoke so much, because her office reeks of death.
