Last night, before leaving work, I took my wallet out of my filing cabinet (which I always keep locked when I am away from my desk or gone for the night) and placed it on my desk. I gathered my things and rushed out, as a fellow coop, Soojin, was waiting for me as we take the same bus.

5 things I forgot about:

  • my wallet with my bank and creditcards
  • my wallet with my driver’s license
  • my wallet with my SIN card
  • my wallet with my Burrito Boyz membership card
  • MY FREAKING WALLET

Yeah, I left it on my desk, for the world to peruse and remove at their prerogative. Of course, I made sure that I had my chapstick, but my wallet? What wallet?

Anyway, I only realized this when I got home. As I talked to housemate Ashna, I was padding myself down and removing my various articles of outerwear (peacoat, scarf, mitts) when I realized that I did not have my wallet on me. I felt pretty dumb, when I also remembered specifically taking it out of my cabinet and putting it on my desk before leaving it to the whims of the world. In fact, I still feel pretty dumb.

I didn’t worry too much about it, since I only had $10 (+$1 USD) in my wallet and all my other cards/things require PINs. The only thing I was mildly concerned with was whether anyone would have stolen all my info to use for online purchases, so I’ll be watching my bank/creditcard account balances even more carefully for the next little while.

This morning, I came back to find my wallet intact, with all its contents (even the $1 USD) seemingly untouched. The people at work are all either oblivious to the finer details of life (such as unguarded wallets) or are all pretty fine, upstanding people, and I can’t help but prefer to believe in the latter. It’s nice to reclaim what you lose, and even nicer to have your faith in people restored every so often.
