5 things I taught myself to do while at work this term:

  • some (significantly) more advanced SQL select methods that I used to set up my program’s exchange rate/financial amount conversion system
  • how to work with arrays, local declaration, and encapsulation of code within JavaScript
  • rudimentary jQuery shortcuts and methods for making reports/webpages behave fancy-like (since jQuery comes baked into our Intranet software now)
  • some best-practices guidelines for setting up local test/QA environments when working on web design projects
  • how to approach and chat up relative strangers (such as some of the other coops) without arousing suspicion or alarm

So this term’s almost over. I can’t say it went by quickly, but it wasn’t really a drag either. Between cookie/pudding/apple sauce breaks with Melissa, chatting about code with Quinton, and serious conversations with Soo-Jin, it’s been a pretty swell term as a whole. I’ll be kind of sad to no longer see some of the other coops once the term is over, but I think most of them will be around in the summer term and I could probably go out for food/coffee with my coolest peers (yes, I’m picky).

As for things I’ve accomplished this term, here’s another list.

5 things I accomplished while at work this term:

  • reworked all the financial reporting code in PPAS to use a standard (read: my/better/awesome/badass) rate conversion method
  • managed to survive the major software update to our Intranet system, getting everything in PPAS up to speed with Content Server 10
  • created a suite of budgeting reports (new) to expand what PPAS can do for budget planning and review meetings
  • debugged and fixed some pretty big bugs in the software—my favourite was probably the nastiest one, involving December dates in our forms that only disappeared every other time the form was loaded (and for the record, I did come up with the fix myself that I should probably submit to the guys up in Development, so that… people in Development will continue to do nothing about such things) >_O
  • helped Quinton and team out in working on the “Gamification” of our internal processes (still a work in progress, but I may as well note it here and now)

Yep, that’s about it. I don’t think there’s all that much left in terms of things to code/fix/write before the end of term, apart from my work term report, so I should probably get on that. It’s been pretty alright. Not sure if I would be returning to OpenText immediately for my next coop term—I feel like I want to go out there and explore some other avenues. I also feel like I should work in Toronto for a change, since I haven’t really been home since second year. Who knows.
