I don’t know if anyone out there *gestures* ever has this happen to them, but sometimes I put my player on shuffle and then a song pops up. It’s usually an older song that has been mostly neglected from having been on your playlist for so long, but it suddenly makes and has so much more sense and relevance here and now. That’s what happened to me today while I was listening to my tunes before school.

I never thought of “Suspension” by Mae as particularly pertinent to any situations of my own until just today. I just thought it was going to be “another one of those songs” that is a good listen, but not necessarily meaningful (to me at least). Now that I am staring at the lyrics (as opposed to hearing them in my head), I am completely flabbergasted at how pretty much everything (with the exception of a few lines) makes me feel… all funny inside. It’s like that feeling you get when you’ve told a horrible lie (say, “I did not push a granny over at the park today.”) and you think the person you’re speaking to (for example, your mother or girlfriend who is strictly against violence towards grannies) might know about your little lie, only without the guilt of having done anything particularly wrong or unpleasant.

Often, I think these happenings point at the universality of experiences to be had by our species. That, or the fact that there really is nothing new under the sun. It gives me a warm feeling to know that this kind of thing, however convoluted and tricky it may seem to me, seems to be less exclusive than completely (or maybe I’m interpreting things how I want to). Have a listen and a lark at the lyrics (happily ever) after more.

Lately I’m alright,
And lately I’m not scared.
I’ve figured out
That what you do to me feels like
I’m floating on air.
I don’t need to know right now.
All I know is I believe
In the very thing that got us here,
And now I can’t leave.

Say anything, but say what you mean,
‘Cause I’m caught in suspension.

Now, I’m wanting this for sure,
And I’ll beg for nothing more.

I’ll plan all day and drive all night;
You’ll love what’s in store.
I can’t seem to stop this now,
Even if it’s not so clear,

And I’ll take what I can get
If you want me here.

Say anything, but say what you mean.
When you whisper you want this,
Your eyes tell the same.
We are gaining speed. I can barely breathe,
‘Cause I’m caught in suspension.

It’s enough for me to get excited,
It’s enough for me to feel!

Say anything, but say what you mean.
When you whisper you want this.
Your eyes tell the same.
We are gaining speed. I can barely breathe.
Oh, please say what you mean!
I’m caught in suspension.

Say anything, but say what you mean.
Oh, I can barely breathe!
I’m caught in suspension.
