If you’ve spent any amount of time speaking with me in private (or in good, public humor) you’ll know I like to quote things. I quote many things. Articles, essays and the Bible (see Christianity); books and poetry (see this post); and even–yes, who’d have thunk it?!–lyrics (see Music)!
This next quote comes from a film (I don’t usually do films since they’re usually too hefty/busty for my liking) based on “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. Granted, the film is not as good as the book itself (since when did films match up to textual renditions anyway?!) and this quote isn’t even in the book, but do bear with me because it is completely saturated with Notables.
…my head is filled with questions and I can assure you no answer to any one of them has ever brought me one iota of happiness. Except for one. The one. The only question I’ve ever wanted an answer to: “Is she the one?”
The answer bloody well isn’t “42″, it’s “Yes. Undoubtedly, unequivocally, unabashedly, yes.” And for one week, one week in my sad little blip of an existence, it made me happy.
Of course, at this point in the film, the villains (I won’t say who because it would spoil it) try and cut out Arthur’s brain anyway–Arthur’s the name of the speaker just now.
Here’s where I tell you “Guys, it’s not really me saying things about a girl through what someone other than me already said about a girl other than her!” but honestly, who is going to believe such a far-fetched story. Clearly, there’s some poor chap out there with serious identity and relational complications that is just dying for (one) someone to get the point of all of this.
I hereby suggest an alternative interpretation. Maybe the above quote was analogous to the one question every person should be asking about their gods. “Is he/she/it the one true God?” and to what degree of certainty can you answer that question? Are you like Arthur, who is absolutely and wholly convicted, without (valid) reasons for misgivings in his beliefs? Again, why, why, and why are key. I know earlier tonight I posted about faith in falsities is futile. Here is (plausibly) another take on pretty much the same subject.
I’m pretty sure if you wanted you could probably come up with other ways of taking this, but I’ll leave that to you (in the comments section).
Update: I still think this says that some poor chap thinks some poor girl loverly but that’s just me.
